David Thorn Wenzel

Illustrator David Thorn Wenzel’s is an artist who has taken fantasy lovers down many paths. His vision of Tolkien’s Hobbit, in graphic novel format, has been updated over the years and is still in print worldwide. This year he returns with a new vision for Kingdom of the Dwarves, written by David and Robb Walsh. This richly illustrated book is an updated and expanded edition of the original that appeared in the 80s. Kingdom of the Dwarves, published by IDW and Random House continues Wenzel’s love of blurring the lines between history and the fantastic with implications that there were dwarven kingdoms in England, much like Tolkien’s. Middle Earth.

Wenzel has split his illustration directions between books, children’s books and graphic novels. His first book, Middle Earth The World of Tolkien Illustrated, was one of the first publications to visualize the characters from The Hobbit. Other graphic novels Wenzel has worked on include The Wizard’s Tale written by Kurt Busiek, Warlords, and Snow White. He started his career at Marvel Comics where he worked on The Avengers and many of the Robert E Howard characters. Though not directly fantasy related he worked under the art direction of Maurice Sendak to create over 14 Little Bear books.
