Saving the day in not-so-little ways

Dragon Con Superheroes

The Dragon Con Superheroes is a community service project team for our members, volunteers, and staff to give back to our local community. Since 2014, Dragon Con Superheroes have contributed more than 4,300 hours to Atlanta-area non-profits.

Projects have included packing and sorting food items for the Atlanta Community Food Bank, maintaining trails at Sweetwater Creek State Park, working the Walk to End Lupus Now, building community gardens with the ACFB, supporting the Lymphoma Walk, cleaning and spreading mulch in Piedmont Park, a school supplies drive and backpack packing event with For the Kid in All of Us, a toy drive and bingo event with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, delivering more than 8,500 books to Literacy Action and supporting their Friends and Family day, giving a woman’s shelter a top-to-bottom spring cleaning for Partnership Against Domestic Violence, hosting a booth for athletes and families with the Special Olympics of Georgia, packing books for Books for Africa, and donating supplies for and filling hundreds of support bags for CURE Childhood Cancer. In all, over 400 Dragon Con fans and their family members have volunteered on the Superheroes projects.

In celebration of our Superheroes’ contributions to the community, all Dragon Con Superheroes participating in this year’s projects will receive a free Superheroes t-shirt. Additional benefits and recognition are given for Superheroes Superstars volunteering regularly with the team.

Event 2: Building Kits for Intown Cares AND Making Valentines for Open Hand Atlanta

The mission of Intown Cares is to prevent and reverse homelessness and hunger in Intown Atlanta.

They envision a thriving community equipped to provide prompt and effective support for those experiencing homelessness and hunger.

Join us as we build snack packs and hygiene kits that Intown Cares will then distribute to our neighbors experiencing homelessness and food security each year! These kits are one of the ways that they build trust with clients who may be less likely to access services.

We are also accepting donations for the hygiene kits if you would like to participate and support this worthy cause and are unable to join us (or would just like to go over and beyond).  Visit our Amazon Wishlist.

In addition to our work for Intown Cares, we will also be working on creating Valentines for our longtime partner Open Hand Atlanta.  Our goal is to turn in even more valentines than ever before!

Registration for this event will open in mid-December, but SAVE THE DATE!

Event 3: MedShare

Volunteers help improve the quality of life of people and our planet by helping to sort, identify, and package critical medical supplies that will be shipped to underserved communities in the US and around the world.  The Superheroes will be participating in two packing sessions – 9a – 12n and 1p – 4p in order to accommodate as many volunteers as possible since there is a maximum of 20 volunteers during each session.

Our three-hour volunteer sorting sessions take place at MedShare, 3240 Clifton Springs Rd, Decatur, GA 30034. They will provide an orientation and training at the start of the session, so volunteers will need to arrive on time.

All volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothing that they don’t mind getting dirty. Carpooling is encouraged, but if driving is necessary, they offer free parking in front of the building. Volunteers should enter through the door marked “Volunteer Center” on the far-right side when facing the building.

Event 4: Lauren's Run with CURE Childhood Cancer

We are ecstatic to support our 2023 official charity with not one, but TWO projects.

For the last 28 years, hundreds of families have gathered to walk and run in support of CURE Childhood Cancer, raising more than $5.1 million for lifesaving pediatric cancer research. Lauren’s Run & Picnic, presented by AutoNation, truly brings the community together, with families, schools, and companies forming race teams to support our fight.

After the race, participants, as well as families diagnosed with childhood cancer, join together for the CURE Annual Picnic. The CURE Picnic is a day unlike any other! Dozens of games, prizes, elaborate face painting, enormous inflatables, music and dancing, arts and crafts, a full lunch, and so much more.

Several volunteer opprortunities are available:

  • Inflatables
  • Carnival Games
  • Food Area Monitors
  • Floaters
  • Clean Up

In addition to walk volunteers, CURE Childhood Cancer is looking for cosplayers (several princesses, superheroes, and popular movie characters) to roam the picnic,  walking around and engaging with the children and their families. We love all Superheroes, Princesses, Power Rangers, Story Book Costumes, Star Wars, X-Men, etc. Since this event is put on for the patients and families that we serve, we do kindly request that the costumes are kid friendly. We will review all submissions and coordinate to avoid duplicate costumes.

Come out and support this year’s official Dragon Con charity and get a glimpse into their incredible mission.
